Step by Step Guide for Adding a New Web Camera

These instructions are for connecting a web camera to your network. Please note that these instructions are not specifically designed for all web cameras, so may not work with your camera. However, instructions that came with your web camera may be incompatible with the Router, so we strongly encourage you to try these instructions first.

Step 1. Connect the web camera’s cables.

Connect the cables between your web camera and the Router. Use the instructions in your web camera’s user manual in order to connect the cables in the correct order. You may use any port in the Router to plug in your web camera.

Step 2. Wait for a stable connection.

Setting up a stable connection may take a few minutes. Your web camera may use lights or other indicators to let you know when it is properly connected.

Step 3. Open a new browser window and type in the IP Address of your web camera.

While making sure you can still view this window to read these instructions, open a new browser window. Type in the web camera’s IP Address. You can obtain this IP Address from the web camera’s user manual or other material that came with it. Or you may be able to assign an static IP address for the camera.

Step 4. Edit the settings of your web camera.

Once inside the control screen(s) for your web camera, do the following four actions. Since these instructions were not written with a specific web camera in mind, the order and location of these four actions may differ. However, make sure you complete each of the four actions before moving on.

1. Find the field labeled Gateway and type in 192.168.1.1

Suggestions:
Open your web camera’s user settings or screens. This section may be called Setup. Find the field labeled Gateway, Gateway IP Address, or something similar. Type in 192.168.1.1 (the IP Address of your Router).

2. Find fields labeled Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS. Type in 192.168.1.1 into both fields.

Suggestions:
These fields may be in the section labeled Setup. They may be called Primary DNS and Secondary DNS, or something similar.

3. Find Network Type field and set it to infrastructure

Suggestions:
Locate the field Network Type, or something similar. Make sure it is set to Infrastructure. DO NOT use Ad Hoc because some Routers do not support Ad Hoc network configurations.

4. Find the Configuration Type field and set it to Static (Fixed).

Suggestions:
Locate the field labeled Configuration Type, or something similar. Select Static (Fixed) IP Address. DO NOT set Configuration Type to Automatically DHCP.

Step 5. Save Changes to your web camera.

Step 6. Confirm local access of your web camera.

There are two ways you can access your web camera. One, you can type in your web camera’s IP Address (which you previously found) into a browser window. Else, if the web camera is properly set up for local access, it should be listed in the My Network column on the home page of this site.If you try to access your web camera through the My Network list, click on the icon and go into the My Network details page where you will find a link labeled “Access Device Locally.” This link will open up the control page(s) of your web camera.Once in the control page(s) of your web camera, you may need to click on “View Video” or something similar to view the live video feed from your web camera.

Step 7. Does it work?

If you are able to operate you web camera, Congratulations! You can now use your web camera locally from any computer configured into your home network.

If you are unable to connect to your web camera, please run through the previous steps again, or consult the user manual which came with your web camera.
